Ecclesiastical Duties

March 9, 1834

Joseph Smith and his traveling companions held a meeting in a schoolhouse and afterward had difficulty leaving because many who believed in their message were eager to speak with them.

March 17, 1834

Joseph Smith attended a conference of elders at which he recruited men to assist the Saints who had been driven from Jackson County, Missouri. He also appealed for funds to buy land in Missouri and to pay debts owed by the Church's leaders in Kirtland.

April 7, 1834

Joseph Smith met with Newel K. Whitney, Oliver Cowdery, Frederick G. Williams, and Heber C. Kimball in the council room and prayed for means to reconcile debts and to prevail against Doctor Philastus Hurlbut.

April 21, 1834

At a conference of elders at the home of Brother Carpenter, Joseph Smith spoke these famous words: "Take away the Book of Mormon and the revelations, and where is our religion? We have none."
