Nauvoo, Illinois
Joseph Smith was arrested on a charge of being "an accessory to an assault with intent to kill" ex-Governor Lilburn Boggs of Missouri and was placed under custody of the city marshal after the court issued a writ of habeas corpus. Joseph went into hiding on this date and would remain in hiding intermittently for the next few months to avoid further arrest attempts—ultimately resulting in his going to Springfield in late December and early January for a habeas corpus hearing.
