Kirtland, Ohio
State of Ohio vs. Smith [Joseph Smith Sr.] et al.: Joseph Smith Sr. and 18 others including Joseph Smith's brothers William, Samuel, and Don Carlos, were charged with riot and assault and battery on the complaint of Warren Parrish. Parrish and others, armed with pistols and Bowie knives, attempted to take possession of the Kirtland Temple. Joseph Sr. and the 18 other named defendants removed them. Justice of the Peace Oliver Cowdery discharged all defendants.
