Joseph Smith was arrested for being an accessory to attempted murder in the Lilburn W. Boggs case, for the second time, on an extradition order. This time, however, he was arrested by Wilson Law, a friend, for the purpose of conveying him safely to Springfield. Henry Sherwood and William Clayton went to Carthage to obtain a writ of habeas corpus.
