Chariton County, Missouri
Joseph Smith and the other prisoners escaped from their guards while en route to Boone County. Although Sheriff Morgan later denied it, there is evidence to support the claim that the sheriff aided the prisoners in their escape. The Missourians rode Morgan on a rail.
